Treat Yourself Like Road Trip Royalty with These 4 Essential Rules

SIMPLE IDEAS TO MAKE YOUR NEXT JOURNEY BEHIND THE WHEEL EXTRA COMFORTABLE, LESS STRESSFUL, AND MORE MEMORABLE

They say in life the journey matters more than the destination. That’s why the best road trippers have learned how to make getting there as safe, comfortable, and dare we say luxurious as possible. But be warned: These simple hacks from the travel experts at AAA will make your next journey by car so enjoyable, you may decide to skip the destination altogether.

Windshield wiper

ROAD TRIP RULE #1: PRIOR PLANNING PREVENTS POOR PERFORMANCE.

The only thing worse than a wonky windshield wiper is discovering it while you’re smack-dab in the middle of a thunderstorm. Pop-up weather and other snafus are practically a given on road trips, so heed the old adage and prepare for the unexpected.

  • Get a plenty of rest in the 24 hours before your trip.
  • Have a certified mechanic check your oil, brakes, A/C, wipers, and fluids.
  • Charge all devices and pre-download maps in case of connectivity issues.
  • Wear loose layers that you can easily adjust for temperature changes.
  • Utilize your car’s Bluetooth and voice controls (or buy a hands-free adaptor kit).

Sleeping in the car

ROAD TRIP RULE #2: FIGHT FATIGUE AND BOREDOM WITH VARIETY.

Even the most seasoned road warrior isn’t immune to the monotony of long drives. But while it may be tempting to chug coffee, play the license plate game, or (worse) look at your phone, these healthier fatigue-fighters will give your brain more endurance for the long haul.

  • Stay hydrated and jitter-free by limiting caffeine and sugary snacks.
  • Stock your playlist with a mix of upbeat music and engaging podcasts.
  • Keep a variety of snacks, beverages, and essentials in the console or passenger seat.
  • Stop and stretch your legs (or better yet, switch drivers) at least once every two hours.
  • Roll down the window or use a dashboard fan to freshen stale cabin air.

Comfort in the car

ROAD TRIP RULE #3: CATER TO THE CAPTAIN. (THAT’S YOU!)

It might seem counterintuitive, but relaxed driving (i.e., stress free) is safe driving. Even if you you’re not big on self-care in your normal routine, road trips are different. Around mile marker eleventy bajillion, you’ll be glad you brought a few luxury and comfort items along for the ride.

  • Moisturizing lip balm
  • Non-medicated nasal spray
  • Breath spray and/or disposable toothbrushes
  • Wet wipes, tissues, and hand sanitizer
  • Lumbar and/or neck support
  • Flavored electrolyte water tablets
  • Invigorating essential oils (think peppermint, tea tree, and lemongrass)

ROAD TRIP RULE #4: SKIP THE LONG-HAUL HEROICS AND ENJOY THE JOURNEY.
Every road tripper has one: A tourist sign on the expressway they’ve passed a dozen times and said, “I should stop and check that out one day,” before driving on undeterred. But great car trips are all about letting the road take you someplace memorable. This time, break the coulda-shoulda-woulda cycle by braking for hidden gems[HP2]  like these.

  • Highly rated diners, steakhouses, and ice cream shops
  • Quaint towns (bonus points for overnighting at a picturesque B&B)
  • Iconic bridges and overlooks
  • Scenic hiking trails, beaches, and riverwalks
  • Museums and other places linked to offbeat history
  • Famous birthplaces and childhood homes
  • Parks, train stations, town squares, and other people-watching spots
  • World’s largest anything
  • Public art displays

Air travel is still the quickest route from point A to B, but if the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that precious few chances exist to be the master of our own destiny. Now that you know what it takes to stay comfortable, relaxed, and curious behind the wheel, the open road may just become your new favorite mode of travel.
