If you spent your last vacation dragging a massive suitcase through busy airports, across cobblestone streets and up narrow staircases, you’re likely looking for ways to downsize your luggage. In addition to eliminating checked bag fees and avoiding the risk of lost luggage, traveling with just a carry-on means you'll have an easier time navigating trains, stairs, public transportation, and travel in general.

As a travel journalist, I'm hopping on a plane at least once a month to explore new destinations. I like to travel as light as possible, and with hundreds of flights under my belt, I've streamlined my packing process and developed a few tricks to keep my packing limited to a carry-on bag.

Here’s how to travel carry-on only.

Choosing your luggage

Before investing in new luggage, research the baggage limitations of the airline you’ll be flying on your next trip—or, if you’re a frequent traveler, the airline(s) you typically use. Different airlines have varying size requirements, especially for international travel.

Beyond size, consider the material and weight that will support your journey with ease. Some travelers prefer hard-sided luggage for its durability, while others opt for backpacks or duffels as a lightweight alternative.

Luggage with expandable zippers and compression straps can be especially helpful when you're trying to pack a week's worth of clothes into a small bag. Just make sure that the bag's size, when closed, fits within the airline's sizing requirements, or you'll be forced to check your bag at the gate.

Packing strategies

Not only what you pack but also how you pack it will determine whether you can bring everything you want in your carry-on. Pack like a pro with these simple yet savvy tips.

  • Wear your bulky clothes and shoes on the plane
If you’re bringing boots or a heavy jacket, consider wearing them on the plane instead of taking up valuable space in your luggage.
  • Layer your clothing
Pack thinner clothing that can be layered. Instead of bringing a bulky sweater, pack a lighter sweater and a wool base layer. This can provide the same amount of warmth without taking up so much room—and it gives you a few different outfit options that can be worn together or separately.
  • Choose neutral colors
Stick to neutral colors that can be mixed and matched. This gives you more outfit options without overpacking.
  • Follow the “5-4-3-2-1” packing rule
If you need simple guidance for how much to pack, try the “5-4-3-2-1” packing rule: five tops, four bottoms, three pairs of shoes, two dresses or layering pieces, and one of each accessory. This helps keep your packing balanced and prevents overpacking.
  • Wash clothes while traveling
Whether you use a hotel’s laundry service, plan a visit to a laundromat, or do quick laundry in the sink with detergent sheets, washing clothes mid-trip can help you limit the items you need to bring. Pack quick-drying fabrics such as merino wool or nylon, and wring out items in a dry towel before hanging them.
  • Minimize your toiletries
Toiletries can add bulk and weight, so only bring what you need. Consider solid shampoo and sunscreen options to reduce liquids, and use travel-size containers or repurpose contact lens cases for makeup.
  • Use space wisely
Compression bags and packing cubes can help you stay organized and save space, especially for bulky items such as puffy jackets, which can compress down to a much smaller size in a compression bag. But the best strategy is to cleverly use every inch of space. For instance, tuck socks or belts into your shoes to maximize room.

Traveling with only a carry-on requires a bit more planning, but the payoff is worth it—in both saved baggage fees and less stress. With a well-chosen bag and these carry-on packing tips, you'll streamline your gear and eliminate the headaches that come with lugging heavy luggage around. The lighter you pack, the more energy you'll have to focus on experiences that make travel truly memorable.
