2023 Review: Ford Mustang Coupe

Scan the film’s credits, and you might think actor Steve McQueen was the star of the 1968 detective classic Bullitt. Ask any car buff, though, and they’ll likely point to the larger-than-life role played by the Ford Mustang.

Now in its seventh decade, Mustang still has the same star quality and sporty attitude that’s made it a perennial favorite.

Of course, times change, and nowhere is that more evident than under the hood. In place of the big V8s of years gone by, my test car featured a relatively fuel-efficient turbocharged 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produced a healthy 310 horsepower (hp). (For traditionalists, two different V8s are available with outputs up to 760 hp.)

The current version shares with the original its diminutive dimensions, including a cramped rear seat. Ultimately, though, while the latest Ford Mustang may not be perfect, it remains what it’s always been: an undisputed American classic.
