History is everywhere you look in Hampton! In 2020 Hampton launched the 400 Years Forward initiative encouraging visitors to explore history and discover the perseverance of the human spirit at Hampton’s rich Black heritage sites, like Hampton History Museum, Hampton University Museum and campus, Phoebus, Aberdeen Gardens, and Fort Monroe. The Fort Monroe Visitor & Education Center, along with the Casemate Museum, interpret Fort Monroe’s legendary history as the 1619 arrival site of the first Africans in the English colonies. Complementing the formidable stone fort, breathtaking Outlook Beach overlooks the spectacular Hampton Roads harbor’s constant parade of ships, submarines, and recreational watercraft.
